394 exhaust flange ?

Are there different exhaust flanges on a 394? I have a 1963 394, and I ordered flanges from a custom header builder. When I got them they were completely different. He told me [from what I described to him] that I have a 455. Now I know for a fact that I have a 1963 394, I ran the numbers on the block, I have ordered exhaust and intake gaskets without a problem, I have even rebuilt the cylinder heads without so much a hiccup on ordering parts. The flanges that I have recieved look more like a 303-324? The guys building them swear that they are for a 394, I am sending them pictures. Reading a few things about a 394, '59-'61? are different from '62-'64? The exhaust ports look to be in the right spot, but the bolt holes are nowhere near mine. Thanks, Sam

Been there, done that. One of the few times I ever used mail order.

Flanges were for 394, but not mine. Cut my losses and made my own.

Later acquired another 394. Its heads matched the flanges I had already given away.

So, are there different bolt patterns on the exhaust for a 394?

One on my first 394, another on my second.

No idea what years they were.

I know the heat riser is different starting in '63. Don't know what is different about it. Could be the different bolt pattern.

I'm not real familiar with the '63-4 394. Having said that, I know there were a lot of changes made between 1962 & 1963. It appears there were several exhaust manifolds available in '63-4, none of which were used on '62 & earlier. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the bolt patterns were different. I learned something new today.

Here are some part numbers to decipher:

579278 Right Exhaust Manifold 1962
579279 Left Exhaust manifold 1962
587510 Right Exhaust Manifold 1963-4
587193 Left Exhaust Manifold 1963-4 Exc. Dual Exhaust
587793 Left Exhaust Manifold 1963-4 With Dual Exhaust

Good Luck!

Chuck

Here is my predicament: It is a '63 394 in a mid 60's dragboat, part #'s really don't do me any good, hope the pics show up. Nope. I'll try to re-size pics and put up.
