3= Oldsmobile Division GMC
66= Delta Royale double check to see if it's 66 or 36
87= fastback hardtop coupe bodystyle (which was not available on a Royale, those were notchback hardtops)
9= 1969 model year
E= Linden NJ assembly plant
159011= car sequential VIN
A true 1969 442 will have a 44 on the body data plate underhood- e.g. 34487. A Cutlass will have a 36 in it 33687. It's known that a lot of 68 442 carried Cutlass body numbers and may be true for 69 also. If the VIN is 33687 instead of 36687, possibly a 442.

The body tag may be cutlass but not the vin on 68 442's.

Just to be clear, ALL 1968-69 442s will have a VIN that starts 344..., however MOST of them will have a cowl tag that shows 336... This is normal and well documented in the Fisher Body Manual.

So this 336879 number inside under the windshield could be a 442

One more time. That's the VIN. ALL 1968-69 442s came with a 344... VIN. Most came with a 336... cowl tag, which is on the cowl, above the firewall, not under the windshield.

I used your VIN decoder, very helpful. It confirmed that my beautiful, one owner, given to me as a gift by my best friend, is indeed a factory 442. The production # said it was 5142. What does that mean? Is that how many were built that year? It's a 4-speed convertible. I was under the impression that there were 5142 convertible 442s built in 1968. Is that correct?
