66 442 Tachometer

Could someone please post pictures of the factory Tach that came on 66 442's on the left side of the dash near the parking brake lamp? I know that they are hard to find, so I would try to duplicate the look of it. Of course if anyone has one for sale, I am interested. I have an original untouched 67 that I do not want to take the dash apart to install a Tic Toc Tach or modify the clock space for one.

So you'd rather drill holes in the untouched dash pad to install a non-original 66 tach?

The 66 tach bolts through the side of the dash pad. By the way, Google Images is your friend. This is the first image that comes up when you search on "1966 Oldsmobile tachometer":

Exactly my thoughts. Both are pricey, so no advantage there either.
You could also consider mounting a tach in the clock pod. You don't have to cut up the dash or wiring to do that.
And still nothing wrong with doing a "period correct" mount of a tach on the steering column.

Thanks

Thanks for the picture and advice. I think I will do something else for a tach, like a small one mounted under the dash just for information. My car is too nice to cut up or modify in any way that would not be able to be put back original (like screwing a tach in the dash).

Racers used a big worm drive clamp to mount the tach to the steering column back then.

Did Olds make two versions of this tach? Ive seen them like the one Joe posted and with a fully chrome bezel. My old man had one that the front half of the tach housing was chrome.

I'm pretty sure the one in the photo is also chrome, it's just reflecting the black interior in the picture.

sure wish shiftworks would make a clock tach conversion for the 66/67 cutlass like some of the other clock / tach conversions they sell.

I have also wondered about two types of '66 tachs. the one in my '66 has a black housing with only a small chrome ring around the edge of the housing. My car is original and I do not think the tach has been painted. Mine looks like the one above that Joe P. said he found on Google Images. I would post a picture, but can't figure out how.

If the car has a console, why not put a console tach in it...identical to the vacuum guage...

Cuz when you really need a tach, you shouldn't be looking at your feet!

Tach

My car has a bench seat so putting one on the console is out. I have decided to mount a 2 5/8" tach under the dash to the left of the column. The car is an all original survivor so it wont need to be shifted fast or wound out too tight. The tach will be just for reference.

1967 442 Tach

We have done a couple of these. I have bored the tach blank and installed a tach in place of the clock. You do not need to chew up your dash and can just re-install the blank to get back to original.
Take a look!
