I do know that the body style as available with a pillar, maybe in '68 as an f85? Not sure on that and don't take it for gospel, or even for paraphrase. I only mention that to perhaps help direct in a search for the truth. (Norm, don't ding me friend.)

I have allways like the post coupes. Don't know the history or story behind the design and often wondered why.
As Americans like options and choices, I guess the factory tailered to that need. They appear to be stronger or more robust in design. I think, in fact they are a lighter car by a few pounds.
I can say for sure that there are less of them compared to the pillar-less models.
Hopefully someone will chime in that knows a lot more.

Dad (Oldsguy), there were pillared Cutlasses in the late 60s and early 70s. Remember that young guy with the yellow 70 post Cutlass that went to the OCA function at the I 70 speedway. We attended in your 69 Delta and drove around the track with Amy in the back seat. Remember old man?

I have only seen production numbers for any of the Cutlass styles posted for the 442 and W-30 cars. It was also my understanding that there have been no confirmed sightings or production numbers printed that show a 71 post style 442 or W-30.

The post coupe was called the Sport Coupe by Olds (as opposed the Holiday Coupe, which is Oldspeak for a hardtop). It was absolutely available on Cutlii and 442s from 64-72. There were about 10 hardtops made for each sport coupe in those years. The reason is that the Sport Coupe was targeted as the low-rent A-body; the hardtop was much sexier looking. Sport Coupe bodies were mainly used on F-85s and stripper 442s. They were (and are) mainly popular with drag racers because the post makes the body stiffer and allows some internal structure to be deleted instead at a net weight savings.
Hardtops have always been and will likely to continue to be worth more than Sport Coupes.

Joe,
Just going on literature I have seen from the History center, 442.com and other listing like the production numbers posted in some of the Motorbooks series, there was not a documented 71 post style 442 or W-30. Not saying there wasn't one but there aren't any numbers posted for it.
I agree the post coupes are rarer but not as desirable money wise. That is unless you have one. Then you see they are pretty cool to have.

Maybe they sold enough Cutlass posts that year to see if there was a market again for 72. Who knows...
Something like 130 post 442s total for 72 in post form is not that high of a number. I'm not sure how many total post coupes were sold in 72 but I guess they sold a few.
