1965 400 Build Thread

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for suggestions & comments to help build the replacement motor for my car (numbers matching motor is going to be pickled away).

Here's what I currently have in the garage for my '65 400 engine rebuild:

Block - 389298B Some light scratches, Not sure if they will hone out.

Crank - stock forged manual with bearing.

Heads - C casting with V222232 on one head. I'm assuming 1967 heads?

Intake- Edelbrock Performer and stock 410448 (1972?)

Cam - ? I only can find a casting number 3860867 on it

Pistons - 7 Cast stock resonably good shape, one shot (has broken rings and grooves)

Rods - Stock

Flexplate - I'll need a flywheel to run the 4 speed.

Car it will be going into:

1968 442 convertible, 4 speed, manual drum brakes, 3:23 open rear end.

Parts I'm looking at:

TRW W31 forged pistons - L2320

Lunati Voodoo - 60802 (ground for the 45' cam bank angle)

Hydraulic. Torque Monster for 400-455 c.i. daily driven street performance vehicle. Excellent torque and horsepower production with heavier emphasis on the low to mid range. Will work in ski boat applications with larger 455 c.i. engines. Choppy idle!
  • Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
  • Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 219/227
  • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .499/.510
  • LSA/ICL: 112/108
  • Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
  • RPM Range: 1300-5500
Valvetrain: Stock or should I go adjustable?

Home port the C heads new stainless steel valves with complete valve job, maybe hardened seats.

Performer Intake - The stock ones are just to dang heavy!

Exhaust - I'd like headers, but having trouble finding some that will fit a 4 speed convert. I have W, X, & Y stock ones.

Goal: A fun reliable street motor that will probably see a few strip passes each year!

Thanks in advance for everyones input!
