1968-1972 F-85 and Cutlass Post Car Question

For the 1968-1972 Cutlass Post cars I have seen the posts in chrome and in body color in pictures of F-85 and Cutlass cars. Why? What determines if a post car should have one or the other for a restoration?

Depending on the year and specific models, the posts were painted as base equipment The chrome (actually, polished stainless) post covers were an option available under RPO B90. In the 1968 model year, F-85s (3100/3200 series cars) all came with painted posts. Cutlass cars (3500/3600 series cars) got painted posts on the Sport Coupes but got the stainless as standard equipment on the Town Sedans and Wagons.

The post and window frame trim is aluminum, not stainless (when the car came equipped with the "bright" trim).
