1968 Cutlass Heater Core Removal

Hello,

I just recently purchased this 1968 Cutlass. I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me how I can remove the Heater Core from this car. As I don't have the factory Manual yet and would like to get it taken out as it's leaking. Also I'm having cooling problems. The water pump was replaced so was the stat and the radiator was cleaned and a new clutch fan was installed. The ther stat was a 195 as factory called that. Any ideas? I checked the oil and it didn't have any water in it. The idoit light had came on. Also replaced the heater valve on the block. This car had sat for around 15 years I'm guessing as it had the orginal plates that showed 84 I think on the plates. Any help would be greatly appricated. Thanks

John

I did my 69...If there the same...Yah gotta pop your hood.....and look to the left on the fire wall..and take the NUTS off the stems sticking out..usually there all GOOPED UP....Once you do that..Go inside the car and go under the dash and the pull the BOX away and the heater core is right there..I did mine in 45 minutes..I was surprised how easy it was..

Change to a 180 degree stat. Is the radiator fan shroud in place it should be its helps direct the air flow

I have the a/c model so would I have to remove the whole a/c cover to get the inside panel off? Thanks

After sitting that many years, a SERIOUS flush would be called for. Pull the hoses and block plugs and force water in and out from every direction as possible.
It is possible that rust and crap has settled in the block, clogging some of the coolant passages. This would be something to do before it gets any colder. It is a wet job...

It may be easier to undo the heater core nuts if you remove the inner fenderwell first. If you decide to do that jack up the car and support it with a jack stand. Then remove the fasteners above where the tire would be, around the fender opening, where it meets the core support, then look behind the tire for the bolts to the frame and to a bracket built into the fender. Once the bolts are all removed you can flex the fenderwell a little bit and pull it out over the brake drum or disc. Then you can easily see all the fasteners around the AC/heater cover. John

take the right fender and wheel off, might as well take the left fender off. Do the upper control arm bushings as they are so easy with the fenders off, A little detailing would be nice. Those fuel lines are nice and accessible.

Where were we..?

Oh yeh, the heater core ...
