72 steering wheel swap/horn inop
Need some help from anyone that has made this switch. I have a 72 Cutlass that had the deluxe steering wheel. When I bought the vehicle the horn worked intermittently. The steering wheel was pretty tore up so I switched over to the 4 spoke wheel. Had to replace the turn signal cam during the conversion and since had noticed that the horn went from working intermittently to not working at all. I have replaced the horn relay because it was fairly corroded and when I would mess with the wires it seemed to have worked. Unfortunately that actually did not make a difference. Going further I did some tests on the wiring etc and then disassembled the steering wheel. I found that the spring in the cam was twisted and bent and I am wondering if I may not have had the correct parts. With the steering wheel apart you can use a screw driver to ground on the column while touching the horn tab in the column and the horn works great. Could someone share the cancel cam part numbers and suppliers that they have used and know they work? I found some Dorman numbers however when I cross reference Dorman says they don't match. Just wanting to make sure I go back together correctly. The way some people drive you really need a horn more often than not! Thanks in advance!

I recently completed the same swap and this is the one I used. You can pick one up at your local parts store for less than 10 bucks.

No worries, I cross referenced that site and found the one for no tilt. It does look like the one that I had used however the one that I have does look like it's separated so could have just been a bad part. Either way found it on Amazon for about $6. Thanks for your help, just needed some reassurance lol.

There's two canceling cams for the common late 60-s through 80-s GM column: tilt and non-tilt. You can look up for any similar application and use that part number. I typically use a Chevelle, as the parts manufacturers are better (still not great) at keeping the parts books correct for Chevelles.

Got it all together and working. Dorman turn signal cancelling cam #83233 along with Dorman horn contact #83230 did the trick. I did however have to file the base of the contact just a bit to fit in the hole of the cam. I read reviews that others had to do the same.

Please show us your cancelling cam, top and bottom.
Having the wrong diameter hub should not prevent the horn function.
I have a 1968 Camaro hub on the blue 66, everything works fine, but it (the hub) is a bit larger than the column.
