alternator belt squeals on start-up

almost every start begins with a squeal from the alternator belt. i am using s 48" belt since 49" is too long and does not tighten.
i have loosened the PS belt to see if that is the issue. it is not. still squealed, so it hast to be the alternator.
or, could it possibly be the water pump?
if i loosen the alternator belt and keep the PS belt tight, it does not squeal on startup.
i put on a new NAPA belt number 25-15490
that belt was tightened enough to stop the squeal, but it broke after a couple of short trips.
what can i try next?
thanks

Let's start with year, model, engine, and with or without A/C

His first post says it isn't the PS belt.

But still need to know A/C or not to find the OEM belt number.
