Cutlass or Cutlass F-85

Hi
My husband has a 1965 Cutlass 2 door Convertible he was given by his father years ago, who passed away a few years later. We were trying to look it up to find the specs and the value of it, but couldn't seem to find anything. One problem is that we aren't sure if it's a Cutlass 2 door convertible or a Cutlass
F-85 2 door convertible. I tried looking it up by the VIN number, but one has it listed as a Cutlass and the other a Cutlass
F-85. Does anyone know how I can find out for sure? Also, what's the difference between the two and is the difference in value very much?
Thanks for any and all info anyone can give us.

My understanding (from a friend with a '65 Convertible) is that the Cutlass was an option package on the 1965 F-85. If you post a photo of the cowl tag or build plate (firewall or door jam I think) the experts here might be able to give you some clear answers.

Is the car a manual or automatic transmission?

Oldsmobile considered all their 61-72 A-body cars to be F85s for marketing and service purposes. There were F85s, F85 Deluxes, and Cutlasses. Cutlass was the highest trim level and convertibles were available ONLY in Cutlass trim level.

So I'd consider your car to be a Cutlass convertible.

Unfortunately, even Oldsmobile played a little fast and loose with this. For the 1965 model year, if the VIN starts 338..., it is a Cutlass. If it starts 333... it is a six cylinder F85. 334... is a V8 F85. 335... and 336... are six and eight cylinder F85 Deluxe models, respectively.

Having said that, even the official model designation in the Parts Book calls the 338... "F85" "Cutlass" for 1965. Meanwhile the SPECS booklet only refers to the 338... cars as "Cutlass". Go figure.

Joe,
The VIN first three are 338, so I take it it's a Cutlass and not a F-85. Thank you so much for all the great info!!

Thank you so much for the info, that's what I consider it now also.

I always considered mine a 1965 F-85 Cutlass because of my dash emblem

In 1965 all Oldsmobile intermediates were called F85 's. The Cutlass was the top of the line F85.
