Maybe someone can help me find the data from my Cutlass
Maybe someone can help me: I could not find the VIN in regular sites.
It is a 1968, the dashboard has a plate Cutlass Supreme, but I´m not sure it is. It is a 350 engine with a 4 mechanic transmission.
VIN 3422878M117948
Plate shows:
BODY BY FISHER
09B
ST 68-34287 LAN121697 BODY
TR 973 D-D PAINT
Thanks

Welcome. Rather than resurrecting a five year old thread, here's your own.
The VIN decodes as follows:
3 = Oldsmobile division
42 = Cutlass Supreme (you have an extra "2" in there, which is a typo - 1968 VINs were only 13 characters)
87 = Holiday Coupe (2dr HT)
8 = 1968 model year
M = Lansing assembly plant
117948 = sequence number
The cowl tag shows:
09B = built second week (B) of Sept (09) 1967
ST 68 = 1968 model year
34287 = Oldsmobile (3) Cutlass Supreme (42) Holiday Coupe (87)
LAN = Lansing assembly plant
121697 = Fisher Body sequence number
TR 973 = blue bucket seat interior with Supreme upholstery pattern
D-D PAINT = Sapphire Blue Poly lower and upper body color

There exists a new improved Data Decoder which you might want to review for yourself. The individual who created the tool most likely keeps track of the number of times it's being used - which is good data.
I tried it for your vehicle and this is what I came up with (below). An image of your actual cowl tag would help, as well. The 1968 model year was (more or less) a transition year for cowl tag information the best I can understand. I have never been able to figure out what 973 refers to. Others will most likely chime in. Good luck.

EDIT: Joe beat me to it, and Joe's information will be far more accurate than the information I provided. Yet, there's an opportunity for you to attempt to try the new decoder tool (if you have a hankering to do so).

Norm, my experience with these decoder tools is that they are frequently incomplete and are A-body-centric. And a library of factory literature provides the same info with greater accuracy.

Joe, I agree with you. I wish I had the availability of literature you possess!

Thank you all
. I'm brazilian and It was not easy for me to find information.
