1964 4 Speed Jetstar Convert L2
#41
I'm not sure, at first I thought I was going to just fix it up to drive. After finding out about the rareity I think it really deserves a frame off or at least a frame on, I think it would be great colors and a real conversation piece at car shows. I am trying to find the missing parts for now and see how that goes. The rear bumper and shifter are the two main things missing. Unfortunately I don't think I have the money to put a high dollar resto into it right now. I have a 69 Firebird "400" convertible that I have been working off and on, on for about 4 years. I'm in AZ so the weather is not a big factor but I still hate to leave it out.

Chevy Astro, wow, the guy that was selling it for the dead guy sure told me some wrong stuff. He told me they are Grand Prix wheels. The previous owner changed out the rear hubs and put front disc's on. He also told me the car had posi as "he went to the store to buy the limited slip fluid", I jacked it up and the wheels spin in different directions.

An ergonomic, if not factory-appearing solution to your shifter problem (if you have one!) is a shift handle extension, see this auction for a Hurst shifter equipped with one:

That combined with a shifter with the right bend would likely put the ****/handle exactly where is should be for comfort.
I had such an item on a 4 speed '65 Starfire that had a Hurst shifter; on that car, the **** ended up being in the PERFECT spot to bash my knuckles on the dash when shifting into 1st or 3rd. But on a '64, that might not be the case, esp. with a sharply curved shift handle.
Not sure if there were different lengths made; here's a vender selling something comparable:

I need a taller shifter as the one in it hits the bench in 2nd and 4th. I see alot of the taller handles at swap meets. If I get the car driveable and haven't found the correct shifter I probably just slap another handle on it and keep looking.

Before you drive that too much (at all) , I would ensure your driveshaft is sufficient length..
EDIT: looks like ya all already pointed this out..

I picked up a pretty nice rear bumper from California, a guy had a few 64's he was parting out. It has a dent and it buckled the bumper a little but there is no corrosion on the mounting brackets, only surface rust. I can see how the dirt and crap can build up in there with that little drain hole. A few leaves or a little mud and its plugged.

After some serious thought I have decided I cannot give this car the attention it needs so its going up for sale. I appreciate all the help and info I received here, look for it in the for sale section.

This is such a rare car I really think it should get a full blown restoration. I have a 69 Firebird convertible that I really want to get done. Unfortunately I can't afford to do both cars like I want to, so one has to go.
