394 Distributor
Hi!
I know that 59-1964, 371 394 Distributors will interchange, but are there any aftermarket parts (Petronix for example or any other brand) that will fit
or do i have to search for some OEM parts and upgrade them by myself?
Thank you and best regards, Dave

I just read this in the jalopyjournal:
i converted a Mallory distributor from a 455 Olds to work on a 394 by making an extension on my lathe.
you could easily make one without a lathe, just grind the teeth off the newer gear (newer gear has a hex drive for the oil pump, original gear has a "D" drive) and drill through it so the diameter is the same throughout, this is the sleeve that connects the shorter shaft to the extension.
then cut off the old distributor shaft at the bottom, trim it down until the HEI + extension is the same length as the old distributor.
drill through the sleeve + extension for a rol pin, you're done!

I had a Pertronix kit in the distributor of the 394 in my 64 Oldsmobile. It worked ok. The problem is that if the electronics in the Pertronix kit fail you have to buy another kit since it's propeitary. This makes it impossible to carry a spare module in your glovebox unless you spend the money to buy 2 kits.
