64 super 88 fuel line to carb issues

How did Oldsmobile use the 3/8 metal fuel line into the carb? My metal line is all beat up, but it comes out to a 5/8 threaded flare fitting, the carb inlet is 5/8, but what would the flare fitting seat against? I bought a fuel inlet fitting, but it goes from the 5/8 to 1/2 inch so that would take 5/16 fuel line.

I don't really understand your question.

The double flared end of the steel tube is what seats on the inverted flare in the carb and fuel pump fittings. The tube nut simply presses the steel tube up against the fitting. Be aware that tube nuts come with different threads for a given tube size. The tube nuts you get at a parts store may not be the same thread size as the one the factory used.
