trying to time a 394

64 super 88, i found the timing marks on the block but cant find the notch in the harmonic balancer, looking in the book its shows it to be on the farthest back belt retainer but i cant see it. Any ideas?

You can take the cap off and look at the balancer when the rotor is pointing to #1. Or, if you take the #1 spark plug out, then place your finger over the hole. Bump the engine around until you feel the compression stroke @TDC with your finger. You'll be in the vicinity.

it should probably be a fairly noticeable notch in the part of the balancer closest to the pointer, if its rusted and hard to see do like oldcutlass says and when you find it mark it neatly with a yellow grease pencil or silver sharpie or whatever like someone did on mine and its much easier to see and read.

wire brush the very back of the balancer. They remind you of cuts from a hacksaw. Also the weight ring on these balancers have been known to slip so they may not be where they should.
