What do these do?

Forgive me for the dumb question, but I have no manuals, and this is my first Oldsmobile.

What do these two ***** do under the dash? Vehicle is a 1965 Jetstar

Also I'm missing the plate for my convertible switch.

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, those are fresh air vent controls, pull out to open vents under the dash.

These ***** are attached to the two vents, one on each kick panel.

If they are seized-up, check the vent doors and you can oil the flexible cables. I'm lucky! Mine work fine. A must when you don't have AC!

DON'T TOUCH THOSE!

If you pull those ***** in the proper sequence the car will self destruct! That feature was installed in Oldsmobiles during the Cold War in case of communist invasion.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies. They are not seized up. I'd always pull them and hear something open but never could figure out what it was.

Pull them out while cruising on the highway on a hot day - you will find out quick what they do (if they are not clogged or stuck.)

If it's like some of my cars, you'll find out that pulling the ***** while cruising on the highway causes mouse turds to rain on your feet...

HA! I picture him pulling the **** and then a reel of stock nuclear bomb test footage, with the trees and houses being blown over!

Better on your feet then in your face!

Make sure you clean your carpet before opening these vents or you will get a cloud of debris!

I think it is the opposite...
Murphy's law states that the cleaner the carpet, the bigger the chance of it getting dirtied...

The law of carpet accidents:
"The probability of a buttered piece of bread falling onto carpet butter side down is equally proportional to the cost and condition of the carpet."

I do believe, mauls, they're ganging up on us Jetstar guys!

Tell 'em the left **** is for the NO bottle, and the right one is for the 'chute!

But of course! Only Jetstars had these. The other big Oldsmobiles without A/C did it with pushbuttons!

Which can rapidly become a PITA when 40+ year old vacuum diaphrams rot and fail, and then your fancy power operated floor vents do not work...

I pulled one on an old ElCamino I had years ago and a dried up lizard blew out of it. Oh well- coulda been a snake...

Well how about his one:
If a buttered piece of bread/toast always lands butter side down and a cat always lands on its feet, What happens when you tape a buttered piece of bread to a cat's back?

I think just before it hits the ground, it will stop in midair and continue to spin!
