Negative battery cable chassis wire

In the PIM, this drawing depicts where the negative battery cable chassis wire is supposed to terminate. However, I don't see a hole where it could be screwed down. Here is the PIM sheet:

Where in these pics is that hole? Am I blind? Completely possible in my advanced age.

Maybe the PIM is talking about a different hole?

The car is a 1970 Cutlass S originally with a 350/TH350.

The hole is in the block. Otherwise there would be no ground cable for the starter motor.

Joe, I am talking about the short small gauge wire that is part of the assembly, not the heavy gauge wire that goes to the block.
I blacked it to show it better below:

And the actual cable with small gauge wire:

Where is the hole for the small gauge wire screw in the "side baffle"?

Do I see a hole where I drew the circle?

I went ahead and cleaned that area a little bit to show that it's just dirty, not a hole. Maybe I should just drill one...

I believe you're looking too low. I believe the hole exists w/ remnants of a previously used screw remaining in the hole of the side baffle. Note the hole is at the top of the side baffle.

Norm, that hole already has something in it. That something is a rubber side isolator for the radiator I think. Not a screw.

I believe that rubber isolator is not located in the correct position and instead occupies the hole where the negative battery cable screw should exist.

To gain a perspective. The location of the hole is nearly in the same horizontal plane as the top of the battery. The hole is NOT located below the top of the battery.

It's probably been wrong for 54 years.

Look on page Section 11, 112 of your PIM. It appears that rubber seal is more "forward" (towards the front) than depicted in your image.

Nevermind, section 11. I found it. It looks like it may have been wrong from the factory...

Hmmmm...anyways, it's a "seal". I don't see it sealing much in its current location/configuration. It appears to be nearly straight up & down (plumb) as depicted in the PIM. Re-examine location of that seal - I think it needs to be "sealing" something.

Now that I have seen section 11, I will make sure all of that stuff is in the right place.
Thanks a bunch!

Sorry about that. I said Section 111 (which obviously doesn't exist) & should have said Section 11.

I think you're going to find that seal is not located as per the PIM but instead needs to be relocated to its correct position. Good Luck.

I think we're on the same page. I think the seal might instead be mounted forward of its current location based on the PIM?

On my 70 442 the smaller ground wire is attached next to a round hole that is towards the front of the car. (See pic below)

I think you got this. Something's amiss, but (again) I'll point out that small ground wire is nearly same height as the top of the battery, it isn't below the battery.

Yes, I think it was wrong from the factory and I’ll move it forward. Thx all!

I wouldn't hang my hat on that statement. I'm somewhat familiar w/ the history of your car via threads since you joined CO. An original 350, swapped out for a 403 by your buddy then a transplant of a 455? Who knows exactly how that configuration took place? They remove the OEM radiator &/or shroud &/or side baffle? Plenty to hook back up in the correct or incorrect positions.

Yes, original 350 swapped for a 403 by my buddy. Then I got it. I doubt he did anything unnecessary and only did enough to swap the 403 in. I pulled the 403 and now I’m preparing for a 455. I’ll make it right regardless if it was like that originally or it somehow got changed sometime in the last 30 years.

Seriously, thanks a bunch for engaging with me all evening!

v8al to the rescue! I looked under there for the first time and v8al is right. There it was, a lone screw doing nothing but awaiting the negative battery wire.

That’s it cleaned up and installed. Turns out that the radiator side seals are installed correctly from the factory as they match where the PIM says they go. Thanks v8al and everyone!
