Interior /dash paint - correct colors ? ('68 Red)
I wasn't sure where to post this thread as it covers Paint, Interior, Restoration, Cutlass, & a documentation issue... so mods move if neccessary!
I'm to the point where I'm ready to paint my dash. I understand the 0% gloss (flat) top & the 30%(low) gloss lower, but the paint codes/chips don't seem to match what my car (& a couple of other '68 Dark Red interiors I've seen ) had originally.
CSM specs for '68 Dark Red (Garnet) dash:
Dupont Low gloss 9385LH
Dupont Flat 9201LM
Rinshed-Mason Low gloss 167B55R
Rinshed-Mason Flat 165B55M
Ditzler DIA Low gloss 71589
Ditzler DIA Flat 71486
..and the color chip looks like this (3rd one down right side) - matches Dupont #s
click for big...
Its a rather dark maroon color.
BUT, my dash looked like this...
..and another '68 w/ red looks like
It looks as though at least the lower dash is NOT the color spec'd, but a brighter red. (Along with the seat backs) My lower looked liked the steering column which is definitely brighter than the chip I have on an original chipsheet.
On mine the upper dash was hard to tell due to fading, but seemed to be pretty close to the darker (spec'd) paint chip color in flat.
Anyone have any ideas toward this ?
And, any idea how/where to source the paint ?
All of the CSM paint codes are now obsolete...
TIA

Bumping this...with hope for info....
Still trying to source paint. Found a 1988 GM interior color that's very close, but not quite...Its a bit too brown.
Anyone else ever done anything with the '68 Dark Red (Garnet) interior ? IF so, what did you use ?

if there's one thing you can't always do is trust the actual color of a chip. that being said, have you order any of the dark red meant for your car to see what the actual paint looks like? if not, just get a small amount to see if it's right. if it's not, you can always burn in up as ground coat, so it won't go to waste.
