Windows

442Harv is correct. I have tried as well. The scratches are deeper than you think, and you would have to remove so much glass around the scratch that the view through the window at that location would become distorted. I think this is one of the main reasons that automotive glass services like Safelite don't polish scratches out of windshields. They just replace them. With side glass, the distorted-view issue is not so critical, but the glass still won't look good.

Here I go again. Back when I was installing stereos, another guy mounted a speaker too deep in the door of a newer Volvo and put some major scratches in the window. We had a local glass shop (the boss new the owner) come over and they were able to polish the scratches out. No idea what something like that would cost now days but it certainly couldn't hurt to find out. Look for a local shop that does bathrooms and such. Let them know you can come to them. If you can, that is.

If the scratches are minor, you can polish them out. I would definitely attempt it before spending the money on new glass.
You could probably polish out pretty deep scratches, the problem is the distortion caused by changing the shape of the glass. It’s a question of how deep the scratches are, and where the scratches are in the glass.

One thing we haven't heard is exactly which window the OP wants to polish. What is the cost to simply buy a new piece of that glass versus buying the equipment and spending the time to polish it? If I'm expecting to be polishing glass on a regular basis, then perhaps acquiring the equipment is worth it. But if this is just a one-off thing, and that nifty new power polisher will just live on a shelf after this job is done, it may not be worth buying.
It's not like we're trying to save some rare and valuable piece of an old car. It's window glass. It's readily available new and not expensive.
