1964 98 Sport coupe

Looking in the shop manual this series has the same engine as Jetstar1 and Starfire. Would this also have the chambered exhaust pipes? The manual only codes for 3457 and 3600 so I assume the 3900 series is like any other dual setup. Any thoughts? Thanks

I am only aware of the 1965 Starfire having chambered exhaust.

Anyone else have pertinent information?

I also only know of the 65 Starfire having the chambered exhaust. I own a 65 Jetstar 1 which doesn't have the chambered exhaust like the 65 Starfire.

1964 3900 series does not have chambered exhaust. Only 3457, 3657, 3667. Chambered system was discontinued on 65 Starfires about midway of model year, somewhere about 5000 units, and was not part of 1965 J-1 equipment.

Probably a cost-saving thing, though I'm sure some states' archaic exhaust laws had some influence. Virginia still has a 1969 law on the books prohibiting chambered pipes, passed in response to Chevrolet's non-resonator systems on Camaro/Chevelle- typical of legislatures, someone doesn't like something, legislate it out of existence.

Those Chevy chambered pipe systems were no more obnoxious than what you hear on some of these newer Mustangs.

With the trouble and expense I went to to duplicate the chambered system on the green Starfire, no pinhead better tell me it can't have them. Olds installed it when the car was built, and everything except the repro chambered sections has a GM part number.

Now, if you want chambered pipes on yo' big Osemobeel, http://www.sweet-thunder.com/chamber..._starfire.html are what I used on the green car.

Thanks for clarity Glen. I had got a set of those pipes from these guys for the Starfire and they are cool. I was going to put them on the 98 as well if it would have been correct. Anybody reproducing the rectangle resonators that go out the end? I'd like set of those and figure the mufflers won't be seen.
