74 Olds 98 Technical Overhaul - Part list - help please

Hey Guys,

my Olds needs a ful service this winter as it's leaking oil from motor&transmission.

Also it seems to me that ignition etc are still 1974 stock.

I am a poor student so I have to check every part twice if I really need it!

I am not looking for a high-performance build. It's just my summer cruiser.

Here is what I think could be replaced:
-Generator (mine is defect)
-Starter (Also defect)
-WIper blades
-Ignition wires
-Brake drum internals (Where can I find the brake drum pads? Can't find it on rockauto or summit, only a spring set. One of my pads is broken!)
-Engine seal kit
-Trans. filter&seal
-Oil filter
-Carb rebuild kit (which one to take??)
-BRake booster (mine is defect)
-Ball joints???
-Ignition rebuild -> Which kit to choose? There are several on the market from $14 to 75 (non-highperf.)

When I put the pedal to the metal on the Autobahn, sometimes the car delivers to power. I think that's a carb+ignition problem. This problem especially happens at 50+ mph.

Which part did I forget, which one is not neccessary? Please help me experts

Best regards from Germany

Moritz

Moritz,

Why do you say that your alternator ("generator"), starter, and brake booster are defective?

Why do you think you need ball joints?
I think that the '74's had the wear indicator on the ball joints:
With the car on its wheels (on the ground or on ramps - NOT jacked up), clean off the bottoms of the lower ball joints (which support the car's weight and tend to wear faster) and look at the bottoms and feel them with your fingernail. The boss that the Zerk (grease) fitting screws into should stick up from the stamped steel surface of the back of the ball joint, I believe it's about 0.050" when new, but so long as it's raised when you run your nail over it, it's within spec (see illustration).

Hi,

thanks for the quick reply! Ill compare your drawing with my Ball joints!

My starter is defective. At the moment I got one from a friend under my car but I have to give it back.

The Brake booster suffered brake fluid and doesnt work since 1 year.

The alternator is defect. The battery doesnt load and the local shop has a "dynometer" for it. It was tested and is defect
