Factory air cleaner with Holley carb

On my 64/98, my engine currently has a different air cleaner on it, since it has a Holley 4 barrel on it. Is there a way to use the factory air cleaner, possibly with a different base, so that I can have the factory look with that stupid Holley underneath it?

Thanks
Adam

I would think yes. I have a '66 Toronado with a Holley, and the factory air cleaner assy is still in place. And, the problem with Toros and modifications is hood clearance.

Get a 1966 or 67 4-barrel aircleaner base. Those years had Q-Jets which should be same diameter as the Holley air horn and use the same airfilter element and upper housing as 61-64.

You used to be able to buy adapter rings to adapt different carbs to different bases but haven't seen those in years.

X2 or you can modify the base of your stock a/c to accommodate the bigger opening.

... I simply used a reciprocating saw to cut the base of my air cleaner when I moved from stock 2bbl to a 4bbl edelbrock. Then, sanded the cut and hammered the opening to form a smooth beveled edge. Of course, you need to be at least decent at metalworking and have the tools to do the work.

But I'm not gonna lie. The factory a/c with some kind of Olds decal or metal ring sure as heck beats an aftermarket a/c housing any day of the week. I wouldn't even consider anything other than a factor a/c.

Did you modify the snorkel also? 4bbl one is larger diameter.

Is it a single feed, dual feed or double pumper?
Dual feed or double pumper I'd think would be more difficult.

How hard would it be to acquire a 4 barrel a/cleaner lower piece? I'm not even ok with metal work.

Adam, are you looking for a "correct" air cleaner housing? I just looked up a few different air cleaner housings for 4bbl carbs that weren't very expensive on ebay. You might need to get a little creative with your search parameters though.

I didn't modify the snorkel because the one on my 4bbl Rochester in the other wagon wasn't much difference in diameter, nor were the others with a 4bbl base that I saw and though about purchasing myself before I decided to modify the base of mine.

You can do it easily, I just used a 14 drop base Elcheapo MR Gasket air cleaner base and put my stock top on it. Works perfect and you end up with a stealth open element air cleaner.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I used the suggestions here and bought a universal 14" air cleaner and used the base to install the factory air cleaner onto my 64.

Thanks- I 'll work on pics to show!
