Uh Oh, Powerblock is dong an LS Olds

Just saw the preview of next seasons Muscle Car on Spike TV.
69 Olds with an LS motor. This should generate a few choice comments in the General Discusion section.

i wouldn't mind putting a cheap 5.3 ls in my olds with an ls6 intake and cam it will run 12's all day handle nitrous weigh less and fuel efficent. Dont get me wrong i love the sbo but at time's i get tired of messing with stuff and tweaking and pushing the limits of 40 year old technology. I see it as a reliable alternative i plan on buying a house soon and building something that can possible fail due to age stress etc. might not be an option anymore. Plus when you can buy a complete 5.3 for 1500 or less what's not to like.

loving the build. if it still looks stock i bet it's so unsusepecting. I absolutly love it in the future this is what i want a completly street capable car with good mpg and enough horses to run in the high 11's . I got my fenders and hood from glasstek in naperville il. I screwed up we had a truck with a 5.3 that totaled out at our body shop i had the chance to but it for 400 bucks. The only down side was i had no space and the boss man was being a jek and said if you buy it you gotta get it out of our yard since he knew what i wanted to do with it .

I'll do an LS swap in an Olds one day.

Thinking about an LS swap into a Bravada

I only know of one S-10 in the country that has an Olds 350 in it. It can be done with a mini starter and custom headers, but custom headers for that app are super expensive, and it's a lot of fab work. That 350 S-10, afte 3 years, still didn't run

First, I'd rather do a turbo Geo Metro sleeper. Suiziki 1.3 DOHC 4 banger, stage 2 turbo kit, built the crap out of the engine with better rods and stuff, drop into a Metro.

350 horsepower in a 1800 lbs car. Now that sounds like FUN!!

Currently building a 55 88 sedan with a 2006 LS2 and 4l60E out of a GTO. Car was destined for the junk yard (no drivetrain, interior, and had some front stub grafted on it that was a mess).

Having a blast making everything fit and work.

Been restoring Olds A-bodys for many years. Needed to do something different.

Has opened up a whole new part of the car hobby to me.

Cool, we need more exposure in classic non-Chevy vehicles.
I wouldn't sweat the purists disdain much.

426hp LS3 6.2L engines with a cam swap pushin 500hp and docile street manners and good MPG.
505hp LS7 7.0L engines throwing down 10.99's in Z06's with drag radials.

Over 500hp with great MPG is becoming the norm in daily driven performance cars
In the end, to each their own. I think you're going to see more and more.

The GM LS motors are the wave of the future. The headflow is absolutely insane
I could never go back to a classic headed choked engine after experiencing the LS series.

Lol. i have said enough in other threads. i think by now gary and ace know i just like giving them crap. the way i look at it, its like the gto. if the olds was still in production the 442 would have a ls in it.

i do like ls motors but olds will always be #1 in my book.

You'll love this.....
When I got the car it was a shell. The previous owner had a couple Olds with 455s, 4 speed, 3.91 gears, etc., he rarely drives them.
The previous owner stopped by to check out the new engine......
I forgot where the hood release was. I had not opened it since summer, about 3000 miles ago.
Then I realized I had not opened the hood of the 6.0 LS in my 68 corvette since I got it out in the spring.
I'm old and the LS just makes the car easy, economical, and fun to drive.

I feel the same as most of you When I look at my jegs book and see a ls based 427 with over 600hp for under 10,000 with a carb . I wonder what level they will build it too on the show?

I had to pop the hood on my LS 78 Camaro this spring.
I had to put the battery back in it. That's about it.

Next Spring my 442's 6.0L / T-56 LS conversion should be completed.
Chicago winter is upon us......it's in hibernation til then.

Brrr, used to live in Minnesota, know that well.
I winterized the corvette today, but we still get enough warm days so that I'll be driving the Olds on and off through the winter.

It's on Muscle Car, they dont do as much engine work.
My guess is they'll just drop in an eRod. Still over 400hp though.

My take is that if Oldsmobile division were still operating today and produced a RWD car, they would be using the LS series just like Pontiac did. It's no greater sacrelige than the factory putting the 403 in T/A's.

It bothers me more when someone swaps in an old engine of a different make. If you're going to deal with old technology, then why not stick with what the car came with? On the other hand, the LS series is the current GM corporate platform, so if Olds were still around it would be just as much an Olds motor as a Chevy.

I totally get why some guys value originality. After all, nostalgia is why we own these cars. Some guys want every aspect of the experience to be nostalgic. But I can relate just as much to the guys who like taking the classic look and wrapping that around modern running gear. Different strokes....

Hey guys, if I get some time I'll try to start a build thread. I am not sure I'll be moving fast enough to keep everyone interested.

I keep bouncing between driveline work to metal patching & bodywork.

Right now I'm beginning the process of gathering the parts for the rear end. My plan is to build a 57 Olds rear with a 59-64 Olds Pontiac posi (3.73's?) third member, and disc brakes.

Got a housing so far.......

That's awesome. 1200hp from a 4.8L. The LS is so tempting.

I'd love to see your setup the next time I'm home (STL). Maybe run into you at a show or something

I've seen those frames under a few pro tour chevelles. It is a work of art.
Interesting choice on the LSx 454. I was guessing a fuel injected eRod.

As much as I want to hate this project, so far I don't. For me it's going to depend a lot on how drastically they change the body and interior. I am somewhat heartened by the fact that they just touched up the welds on the quarters instead of cutting the whole thing off.

I don't quite see the point in applying the expensive powder coat primer before doing metal work. Seems to me you'd be better off metalworking as much as you can before putting that stuff on.

From the rendering, it looks like they're keeping the body lines. I wouldn't change that on mine. Hmmm, great minds think alike
I think you can forget about anything stock on the interior. I really liked the look of the 72 seats with the black backs and chrome piping. But I'm guessing on TV some aftermarket maker will "donate" some seats for a plug.
I was kinda lost on the powdercoating too. Did they powdercoat, then remove the powdecoating to weld up the body panels? I think they got ahead of themselves.

They probably just wanted to avoid making two trips. Plus I guess you'd have to put something on it to protect from flash rust, and then have to turn around and strip all that off to do the powder primer. Clearly it was an ad for the company that does the coating, but I can't imagine spending $1,800 to strip and prime, then turn around and take a grinder to it.

That's a cool article. Not surprised at all.

My end goal was to setup a turbo or twin turbo on my 442.
That's why I just took MIG and TIG classes.

Now I just have to master the component combinations since I'm a newb in that category so I can figure out the investment needed.
This is why I kept the truck exhaust manifolds.

These LS motors do respondwell to turbos. Hard to make 600 hp and get 20+ mpg any other way.
But I susprct my T10 and 10 bolt wouldn't last long behind that.

Probably not Gary....

Then you'd probably have to upgrade to a Viper Spec T-56 or stronger.
