Timing cover seal

My 403 has a leak at the timing cover / harmonic balancer seal. I was told i need to remove the timing cover to replace this but i was wondering if it can be removed without taking off the timing cover and what tool i would need to do this.

seal

You sure can change the seal without removing the timing cover. You will need a harmonic balancer remover and installer tool, a seal remover hook type tool, and a seal installer tool, that can be made from a steel tube to go over the crank snout. I can post a picture of the one I made if need be. You should also check the balancer carefully where the sleeve rides. If the balancer has a groove purchase a speedy sleeve from your local auto parts store. Be sure to use some sealer on the outer part of the seal and some grease on the rubber part. It's easier if you remove the radiator to give you room to work. Good luck, keep us posted.

There is a special Kent-Moore tool that can remove the seal without removing the timing cover, but the easy way to do it is to drill three or four small holes in the metal part of the seal (use heavy grease on the drill to catch the chips). Screw sheet metal screws into these holes and use the screws to pull the seal out.

Of course, if you have any question at all as to the condition of your timing chain and gears, NOW is the time to just pull the cover and replace it...

Yes, this is a classic MIGHTASWELL.

Will the timing cover seal for the 350 fit a 403? All the seals i have found say they only fit a 350 and smaller engine.

Every single Olds V8 from 1964 to 1990 (except, of course, the 1964 394) use exactly the same front cover and exactly the same front crank seal.
