‘67 Toronado exhaust heat riser spring attachment

I’m slowly getting through all the engine parts, cleaning and restoring so I’m ready when the heads and carb get back from the shop. The heat riser spring on the driver’s exhaust manifold just seems super strong and tight to me when attached. Does it really expand enough to open the inside flap, or do I have this attached incorrectly? Pics below - unattached spring, attached spring. Does this look right?

It looks right, however I would just wire it to stay open. Eventually they always seem to get bound up in the closed position.

Yeah, the way it's situated, all I would need to do is unhook the spring and the weighted bit would hold it open. It moves really easily, surprisingly.

I moved the spring so that it actively holds it -open- so it wouldn't flop around.
