Hello everyone, long time no chat. I'm about to start working on my 57 again and plan to do some oil changes before installing a new oil pan. However I started remembering how much of a pain it was to fill the oil in the first place. I have not been able to find a funnel with a small enough tip. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there an easier way to fill the oil? Thank you in advance.

Try filling through the oil fill tube and not the dip stick tube

Okay, now I feel like an idiot, oil fill tube? Where is that located?

Passenger side front of engine, the tube with a 1" ID with a pull off cap (the breather) about the size of a large door ****. Don't feel like an idiot it's part of learning. Kudos for taking a try at it!!!

No kidding, you can fill oil through there. Never would have have though. That's 10x times easier to fill. Thank you!

If you will go to ebay and buy you an original shop manual for your car you will learn a lot about it. It will also come in very handy for repairs.

Or if your gonna have the oil pan off anyways you can fill the pan with the proper amount of oil then install the pan, this way will become a revolutionary way to change oil and also more of a challenge

And major pain in the ***. I don't know if you have ever dropped or installed a pan in a car with a X frame but it will not come out square with the world.. I could be wrong on this as I have never removed a pan on a 57 but all earlier first generation Old's don't give up their pans without a fight....Tedd

Who, the guy that was gonna refill the oil through the dip stick tube or me who suggested refilling the oil pan first? Both ways are insane!

To be fair, I was able to successfully do it through the dip stick tube, using a regular funnel and a piece of file folder in a cone shape at the bottom. It was an absolute pain in the butt and a mess, kept figuring though that there was an old school funnel that I couldn't find. I just went back to the manual..... yup, there it was, crankshaft breather should be cleaned every time the oil is changed.

I am hoping this weekend will be in the high 80's instead of the 100s that it's been for the past couple months. Then I might be able to work on my 57 a bit.

Nobody has asked the question "what kind of oil did you use". So, what kind of oil did you use. I hope you used something with zinc in it. If not you need to drain whatever you put in it and refill it this time with some oil high in zinc content (like Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil). Otherwise you will be replacing a camshaft in the near future.

Listen to what the man says. Oldsmobile had issues with soft camshafts when these cars were new. I'm mighty afraid your engine is long out of warranty!🙃
