Wide tires
Hi new here, I’m looking at buying a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and I want to put wide tire on all 4 corner, my question is how wide can I go… I see a lot of 285 on the rear and around 255 front. Has anybody squared up there cutlass and if so what was the tire width?

Depending on how low the ride height is, and how much caution you want to use while driving... will determine how wide you can go up front.
I ran 255/45/18 up front for years with no issues with about 2-3" lowered suspension. It would rub the sway bar just a touch reversing out of my driveway at full lock.
You could run 275 square, but the front may cause issues if you're lowered. If it's not lowered, I think (personal opinion) a 275/40 up front will look goofy due to the wheel gap and low profile tire. If you don't mind being extra cautious when driving, then you could go for it.
275 in the back is easy, 285 is getting a little snug and will require proper offset. 295 is doable but everything has to be right. Even worn out rubber bushings will allow the rear end to move around and may rub the quarter panel lip or tail pipes.
I'm currently running 245/45/18 on 8" wheel up front, and 285/40/18 on a 10" wheel in the back. Car is lowered about 2-3" overall.

I ran 255/60-15s on the stock 15x7 wheels at all four corners of my 69 H/O. There was a very minor rubbing in the front if I hit a bump with the wheels turned to the stops. Other than that, no issues. You can run wider at the rear, but not really at the front.

thanks for the reply

Just put it on the ground and hour ago after tons of brake work. 275/40r18 square, Conti extremecontact02. No rubbing anywhere, at least while stationary. Wheels are 18x9.5 5.5 backspace.

Well, with the wheels straight ahead, I wouldn't expect it to rub. Turn the wheels to the stops in each direction and bounce the suspension. That's when the fronts will rub.

By stationary I was talking about not being driven and dealing with suspension travel. Lock to lock the fronts clear. Backs are obviously fine. Was running 275/60r15 drag radials before

1997 GTS. After a lot of false starts and issues on getting the olds on the road again I bought it last year. Now I have to get the Cutlass going because 1 passenger seat and 2 kids is just always arguments over who has been driven to more practices in the cool car for the week. I was close to dumping the Cutlass to free up more cash on it but the wife actually likes the Cutlass despite never being roadworthy in the time we've known each other.

Good problems to have.
My wife doesn't mind the occasional cruise in the Cutlass, but she doesn't like the windows down because it messes up her hair. With no AC, that means I'm usually cruising solo in the summer.
My son is only 2 years old. will be a few more years before I'm comfortable putting him in the Cutlass.
