Generator vs Alternator

Gday,
The generator in my 56 S88 decided to stop working yesterday. I am deciding wether to find an old genny or convert over to an alternator as now is as good a time as any! I think i will go with the latter. Has anyone converted to a alternator on a 56? and if so can you give me any part numbers/pointers/advice etc!! Thanks in advance!!

If you care about appearances, there are companies that will package alternator guts in an old-style regulator. Here's one:

If you dont care about appearance, go with a GM 1 wire alternator. And at the same time you can get rid of your voltage regulator on the firewall. I did this swap many times and you cant screw up the wiring..1 wire to the positive side of the battery. Alternator, alternator bracket and 20 minutes of my time cost me under $100. Done
