Calling out all the Hill Country Rockets (TX)

Looks like I am moving to Austin to take a new job. How many of y'all are in the Austin area? I will be adding to the rocket population at the end of the month.

Excellent Steve!
Looking forward to meeting up.
FYI, Austin traffic sux. Be wary...

David, Lonestar, was saying how
the Austin & Hill Country boys need
to meet up in say Spicewood at Opies
BBQ at the corner of 71 & 191 for
a get together and maybe a run.

The boys from San Antonio and maybe
Houston and DFW if they wanted to come down.
Before it gets to damn hot anyway.

Sounds great. I've lived in TX before so I am not too concerned about the heat. I tolerate dry heat just fine. 10 years in Sherman and two in DFW. Looking forward to Austin. I've heard about your traffic so I'm thinking more like DFW. I'll be driving my Olds down and letting my wife have the new car. Hope our house sells quickly. Would like to meet any CO members in the area since I will be learning the area.

Hookem Horns, Dane lives
in Austin. Also 66400, Henry
and a few more as well. I try
not to go into town to often,
to busy for a country boy.

I see your from NW AR. Where abouts?
My Dad lives outside Mena, beautiful country.

I currently live near Bentonville. I too prefer the country life. I will be looking for a small bit of land that is out of the city. I'm sure I will be exploring a lot once I get down there. We love it up here, I see many similarities to the Austin area, except all the people. I will have to re-acclimate to TX again, but that should not take long.

We went to Bastrop last weekend
for a wedding, I was suprised at how
many new subdivisions were going up
between Spicewood and Southwest Parkway,
Bee Cave area, along Hi-way 71. Crazy the way
people are moving down. I saw a report where
170 a day are coming into Austin to live.

Yeah, I was looking at the east side. Of course pictures of listings on line probably look completely different in reality BTW, are you the one I see listing Olds parts on CL in Austin? If you would rather move that to a pm I understand.

Yes, that's me. I have done ok with them.
It is a pita trying to keep up with all of 'em though.
Ad expires, then the pics go away. I think most of the
Texas boys know that all those damn ads are mine.

OK. I am looking forward to exploring (new to me) salvage yards. Most of the stuff up here is about gone. I do know where a complete 68 Toro is. I've been thinking about that 455.......The owner wants to sell it complete though.

Will be nice to see blue bonnets again. Tried to grow some up here but a rabbit ate them right when they bloomed.

I had a 68 Toro back in the day.
That engine is a beast. I think
Henry's yard is in North Austin.
From what I understand he has
lots of good stuff. Haven't been
there myself but hopefully one day.

I am moving to Houston (Tomball) next week after, living in North Texas for the last 5 years. Will probably leave me car up north and drive to events from there, haven't made a final decision yet. South Texas has plenty,of events, especially around the Hill Country. Welcome back home.

Welcome back, Steve! As Adam said, plenty to do and see in the Hill Country. I'm game for just about anything as long as a big city's not involved

Keep us posted on any get togethers or if you make it out to the Burnet area.

Quite a few of us in the Austin area, not all on this forum. Lots of great cars and car events that are non-Olds as well. I've lived in this great city for over 25 years and the recent growth is putting pressure on the traffic and home prices are about the highest in Texas. PM me if you need any advice on your relocation plans.

Thanks Dane (Hookem) I will certainly need some local info on housing. Probably be resigned to an apartment until I can sell my current home.

A friend of mine is building his retirement home in Salado for himself, his wife and something like 8 (I think) '67 442s including a W-30 he's had since 1973. When I was stationed at Ft Hood, we used to go to a cruise night at a Whataburger of 35 in Round Rock.

@txtom PM received and responded
@tmaleck- initial area I am looking at is south Austin. Is it OK?? Any areas that are higher crime incidence? I will have to drive my Olds down there and I don't want it to turn up missing.
Thanks for any replies.

Tim, there's more cars in Austin than here. You guys set something up and I'll be there and I'm sure Adam would come as well. Or I can get with Adam and the folks he knows and put a date on the calendar. Let's do this before the heat takes away all of the incentive

EDIT: Maybe tie it in with Steve's arrival to town?

Yes! I am up for a meet and greet. I look forward to it. Name the place and I will find it. As long as my current employer does not cut me loose prematurely I will be in Austin at the end of the month. When it is closer to the date I can provide a contact number. I haven't had proper BBQ since I left Texas.

South Austin is a big area. Southeast Austin is going through gentrification, but each neighborhood is different. South and southwest are a bit pricier. I'm in Manchaca, in between Austin and Buda (it all really just runs together anyway). Some good values in this area, but many subdivisions are in the planning stages. I'd say anywhere near me would be fine.

Tim,
Thanks for the information. That does help. I will be working off Guadalupe. Figured looking south would be an easier drive.

I go to this show on the first Sunday of every month. It's a little town about 20 miles northwest:

Texas442, that looks like a fun venue. I will definitely check it out. Probably won't have time to wipe the massacred bugs off before the June show. Looks like I have identified a place on 35S. Now if they will just send the application to me!

Still scheduled for arrival on 30 or 31 May, unless my employer gets mad this week. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
