Balancer and front seal issue.

Balancer and front seal issue.
Is there anything but the oil slinger that goes between the crank gear and the balancer? I've installed a new crank seal on the front cover and when I installed the balancer it pressed the seal deeper into the front cover. This is an engine that is new to me that I've been re-assembling so I'm not exactly sure what all is supposed to be there. I had to buy a new balancer (Super Cars Unlimited) since the one that came with the engine was damaged.
When I installed the new seal I left the cup flush with the lip on the front cover. The balancer slipped on relatively easily, but rested against the seal. I tightened the balancer bolt and it noticed that it pressed the seal farther in on the cover probably 3/16"-1/4". It doesn't look like there's enough cup engagement with the front cover.

I think I've got it figured out.
The front cover that came with this engine was bent at the top and since I had another cover on an engine sitting next to it. The difference being the engine sitting next to it was a diesel. I guess this is another difference between the two.
The cover installed is the one from the diesel, the other one is the cover that is bent at the top.
I feel kind of silly now because it looks obvious with them side by side. I went digging around in the shed and found an old one that is better shape and not bent.
Learn something every day.
