Without defining "better" your post is as useless as most of your posts.

A 1972 engine will be happy on low octane fuel where as a 1970 will not. So in terms of fuel costs a 1972 is better isn't it?

The 1970 engine has higher compression & makes more hp. Everyone knows that. No reason to make idiot posts like your fabulous ewweu post above.

You are sure making a lot of friends here aren't you.

- the poverty caps were standard issue (called chrome wheel covers)
- Vinyl roof was not deleted - it was option C08 even with CS
- 3.23 gears were the factory standard for this engine trans combo if I'm reading that chart right.
- bucket seats A51 or split bench with armrest A65 were both standard - just had to choose one. Console D55 only available with AT or MT M20
- it's not a very rare 'poverty Cutlass'. It's just a CS with its base features and some options.
- power disc brakes JL2 were standard equipment on ALL Cutlass models at the time this car was produced.

I agree with most that if it was a 4 speed car it would be more desirable. Chances are with 125K it's due for some maintenance anyway.
It's also true that the 350 4bbl was standard on the CS right? I think that may wrap this one up as one of the lowest optioned cars I have seen. Now I'm not knocking this guys car, it's in great shape. But even a no-optioned janer needed a buildsheet at the factory.

Thank you Kurt. Where would I be able to source out this information for future reference? I'm also curious about the rest of the Cutlass line up for 1972.

Yes, the L34 was standard. It could be downgraded to an L32 for nominal $33.00 credit against the car build. You're right that all cars going through production needed a build sheet, but I don't know that I'd say it's one of the lowest optioned cars built. It does have:

A02 Tinted Front Glass - 30.00 SPECS doesn't require A01 for AC for some reason....
B32/B33 Floor mats - 14.00 (7/7)
B93 Door Edge Guards - 6.00
C60 Air conditioning (fairly big ticket expense option) - 397.00
D34 Vanity mirror (passenger side) - ?$
JL2 Power disc brakes - 68.00
N47 Power Steering - (required with C60) - 113.00
T44 Hood lock - 10.00
U63 AM Radio (yup - it's an option) - 73.00
Y60 Convenience Group lighting - 35.60

Dealer installed:
U35 Electric Clock - 18.00
Radiator surge tank - these are now repopped for 200.00. This one is clearly OEM.

I've seen cars with less options, but overall I think the majority of folks are focusing on the M15 and calling it low option. It has a nice gear ratio for a trans swap. IMO this is an easily upgraded car and would be a perfect candidate for either an M20 or TH350 swap, change the wheels and you have the 72 Cutlass Supreme that most of us have come to know. It all comes down to how 'pure' you want to be in keeping the car 'as built'. 1 of 29 is a significant number, but as others have stated that doesn't make it 'desirable' for a lot of folks.

Looking at the cowl tag and body number, Framingham did not produce a lot of Cutlass models in 72. This one is only the 1,845 th car and at close to the end of 72 production.

The higher the compression, the more efficient an engine will run. Therefore, it would depend on how much less of the more expensive fuel will get burnt under identicle conditions
