1956 Oldsmobile 88 Gasser

Found this listed locally for sale ($19k). Thought it was pretty cool so wanted to share.

1956 Oldsmobile 88 with a kool older paint job. Zeak did his magic on the restriping and gold-leaf lettering along with a full lace and paneled roof. Red film on the windows really sets off the whole image for a complete package. Straight axle front, Disc brakes, Power brakes and Steering all backed by a fresh build 355c.i. sbc with a Turbo 400 trans. Interior is simple and in good condition with purple carpet and traditional white vinyl seats and door panels. Had my fun now ready for a new proud owner. Steal it today for $19,800. Trade

I'm sure it would cost a lot more than $19,800 to duplicate that. Pretty cool though I'm not too keen on the Chebby engine, at least they sort of disguised it to look like a Olds engine sort of...

I agree, it could use an Olds engine but the guy did a great job with the whole gasser look considering its not a typical Belair!

Yes, another "unique car" for the right person. The demand for a "bastardized Oldsmobile" isn't real high.

Better than seeing it at the scrap yard. I ran into a 62 Dynamic 88 at the junk yard last year. It was a complete car, rust free, once restored car and was a shame to see. No idea why it ended up at the yard but they were not allowed to sell it as a complete car because they only had a dismantling license. On the bright side, I got a really nice clean upholstered bench seat and rear seats and 4 brand new door panels from the trunk for under $200. I also got the carb and intake for another member on here.

That car really would be neat with a 394 ( or better a 419 ) , dual quads , and a slant pan "Hydro-stick " .
" Over the top " with a 6-71 blower !

No offense, but there are older and newer Olds engines available, the Chebby motor didn't really save anything from the scrap yard. I'd like to find a 55 2 door sedan to "save from the scrap yard". I know where I can find two 58 Olds (371) engines right now, and I am dealin on a J-2 set up.

Charlie, you're makin me cry. I sure wish I could remember what happened to that 394 stuff went that I had. Now you got me thinkin about finding 57-64 rear axle housing. Were the good 394 heads number 21's ?

I meant the whole car itself turning into a gasser vs being neglecting or ending up in a yard. I'm with you and everyone else here. Chevy bad. Olds good.

Cool, I have no problem with taking a car with missing parts and making it into a "nostalgic Gasser" or even a "nostalgic NASCAR" car with an Olds power train. It really burns my AZZ to see a car with a "bastardized" power train. I have gone to car shows and seen Chebby (and LS) engines in Buicks, Pontiacs, Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles.

Nope . #23s were the best of early Olds heads . Larger exhaust ports and valves .
They came on '61 Starfires and All '62 thru '64 394's .

Wow. I just spent an hour looking through that whole thread. I wish I had half the skill (and space) as you. My dream is to do the same with a 68 or 69 442 one day.

I can see that. 8 years and still going strong. That's motivating and realistic.

63 Starfire Ultra High Compression 394 dual 4 barrel Offy dressed with a turbo 400 and 9 1/4 Posi in a 55 Super 88 no straight axle, just disc brakes up front.

Your car is a very nicely done show car with lots of attention to how it was in the old days. It is one of the reasons that most of us enjoy going to car shows; to see a variety of cars done up nicely in a variety of ways. That car is a real eye catcher and with the power brakes (and probably other creature comforts) it can be enjoyable to drive on the street as well. Good luck with the sale.
