455 swap into A body
Hey guys i have searched around a bunch on here havent found the exact info i need yet. Im putting a 455 into a 1967 cutlass sedan. I went with thorton shorty "headers" so i didnt need to redo all my exhaust pipes. I used the motor mounts from the 330 that was in the car. The issue im running into is the headers are hitting the steering shaft and the crossmember onder the engine slightly. Has anyone used this combo and had this issue? Did i overlook something in my research and order the wrong parts ? I was under the impression i wouldnt have to dent the thoron headers up to make them fit . Thanks in advance

Talk to Thornton about it. Maybe try a new motor mount on that side. I was surprised how close my Sanderson were to the steering shaft on my 70S. They had plenty of room on my G body, go figure.

The 1967 442s with 400 used exactly the same motor mounts and frame pads as did the 330, so your engine is in the correct location. If you reused the old motor mounts, they may be compressed from age. the correct mounts are the 2261 style. Despite what the ad may say, those headers are designed for the 68-72 cars, which are about 1.5" wider at that point of the frame. Most manufacturers have stopped offering headers for the less popular 64-67 cars. Frankly, you'll be better off with repro W/Z manifolds, since those shorty headers only give you the look of real headers without the performance benefits.

Thanks guys i was able to move the steering column over and gained a little room. Verified i have the correct motor mounts but it was too tight. I still had to dent them. Thanks for the replies . And yea joe i wish i wouldve went with the manifolds now ! I got impatient and dented the headers to fit.... passenger side cleared fine i wonder if i didnt have a driver side that was welded wrong. I talked to troy thorton and he said they should fit in a 67 without hammering them. But they would be tight.

I also have hookers on a 67 no denting needed. And they fit even better if one chooses to mill down the exhaust side of the heads to make the center divider flush.

I actually have a buddy who has a 67 with hookers and he has a mile of room compared to mine... i can take pics of mine with the dents in it if anyone wants 😂 .i think i may have spmething else going on because they were way tight on the driver side....may even be a little tight on the driver side still with the dents they only have maybe 1/16 of an in of clearance.
