1984 Olds 98 Coupe Mecum

If you think the 1976 Olds 98 at Mecum was a lot.

Look at this one. It went for $29,700 with premium!

https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0121-44...le-98-regency/

Now I know it has under 5000 miles, but I just bought this one with 19000 miles for half the price.

I will take an Olds 350 V8 over a 307 V8 all day plus my transmission is not weak as in this car. Nice car but are they going crazy?

I did I guess, really glad I got it when I did. I will most likely die with the car.

I buy an Oldsmobile because I like 98/88, not to make a killing. But these prices are a but crazy.

A 1984 Delta 88 coupe with 74500 miles went for $9350 I think. I have one that I bought 9 years ago with 22,000 miles for $6000 and I was crazy. It just turned over to 30,000 miles if that car with 74,500 is worth that what would a 22000 mile car be today?

Wow. Just wow. About two years ago I bought a 1985 Delta with 5,100 original miles on it and I thought $8,000 was a little high.

I liked those cars from that era, During the 90's a friend had a beautiful 85 Delta 88. I bought an 88 Caprice LS that I drove for almost 10 years. When I had to replace it in 2004 I tried to find either an 80's Caprice, 88 or 98 but I couldn't find any rust free examples so I settled for a 2000 Grand marquis. I always liked Caddies but I wasn't going to be bothered with their HT4100 piece of junk.

My thinking is that cars like that were supposed to be plentiful and start at $5000. The reality is that I had to drive to Houston to buy my 96 98 and there are only a handful of Oldsmobiles left of any era.

Not high, having 5,000 miles is a desirable car. Worth every penny, drives like new.

The biggest concern on these is the roof molding at the base of the vinyl. I found 2 for my 23000 mile 1984 Delta 88 coupe in 2012 since mine had a crack. Fast forward to 2018 they were falling off. I paint to match and like new again, but I have never seen another set since. I see a lot of 1981-1985 cars where these are gone no matter the miles. Needless to say I stay out of the sun or cover them up

But $9350 for a 75000 mile car seems on the high side.

Yeah that was my thought. Where else can I get a nearly new full size that seats six people with a V8 and RWD for $8K?

As someone new to car collecting its become obvious to me that Mecum prices reflect this market as accurately as gunbroker prices reflect gun values.

Mecum, Barrett Jackson, et al are not the real world, as you know. The sale prices at those auctions are less about value and more about people with more money than brains "winning". The alcohol tends to help. Unfortunately, when Joe Dirt watches these on cable, he now assumes his POS that's rotting into the ground is worth a million bucks.

And it distorts the market, as I should have known but didn’t. I had 1/2 hour to make a offer on my car, a neighbor was ready to sell to a dealer. My recent knowledge of prices was only based on watching auctions for the last 10 years. Glad I picked a low number to offer, ignoring the attraction I felt towards the car. But easily could have overpaid.

I have learned that bargains are not bargains. A nice low mile original car is always a find, as long the price is not real crazy. Seems like $ 29,700 for a 1984 Olds 98 is crazy, but who knows.

I thought I was a bit crazy to pay $ 14,960 (including fee) for my 1977 Olds 98 coupe but maybe not. I thought the same thing you did , where are you going to find another car like that? I have been looking for years for a 1977-1979 98 coupe and then it came along in black to boot. So I paid up, I was thinking $12-13K but had to go higher and I was happy I did.

Even at 19,700 miles she is tight and like new.

Buying the nicest, most complete car you can is always the least expensive option. If only I'd listen to myself on this...
