Do tubular control arms make for a bumpier ride?

Hey Guys, I love the handling of newer cars like my 2000 Accord. I got some rear boxed aftermarket control arms at the swap meet. But what I was wondering about is if fronts would ruin the smooth ride of the old American cars, poly bushings and such. 84 cutlass H/O. Thanks Jackson

I would think that the polyurethane bushings would have more of an effect on ride quality than the tubular control arms. Then again, if your Oldsmobile has OE control arm bushings in it now, even polyurethane bushings would be an improvement.

Jesse is correct. The bushings are the determining factor for ride quality. Urethane bushings (no matter which arms you use) will give a stiffer ride since they are less compliant than rubber bushings.

Most people replace the worn rubber bushings and find that the car rides better even with the poly ones installed.

If you do switch to poly bushings buy a tub of the grease/paste the manufacturer recommends for assembly. The amount they give you with the kit is not enough. If you don't grease the crap out of them on assembly they will dry out and squeak like crazy. Been there done that.

^x2^ I had a tub of the lube paste available when I changed mine out.

I’m a fan of the bearing style bushings, such as Global West’s Del-A-Lum. Smoooth and a great ride..
