My 1970 W30 discussion thread

You are correct. The fourth owner told me the car had been in superb condition but when He got it in 1977 or 78 the paint had faded on the hood etc so he had it painted in the Oklahoma panhandle and he even remembered the painters name. He is long deceased. He said the guy tried to match it as best he could. Not quite the same is right. Door jams, trunk, and engine bay are all original as is the vinyl top chrome trim etc. Every single thing done to this car since 1970 by every owner is still visible on the car. The headers are the ones the forth owner put on the car in 1978. I am having the car buffed out by some pro detailers because I did not trust myself to buff. Carpet is still very good shape. Not mint but worth leaving as is. I cannot imagine another 442 W30 in this condition. That is perfect body, interior all original etc. usually the cars are either needing everything or already frame offs or 1000 mile cars and cannot imagine there are many of those and even so called 10,000 mile cars although “Original”, still need a frame off and then they are not original anymore. Obviously you can paint this car at some point and with the body perfect that would be easy but I do not plane tickets do that while I own it.

Well thought I would show a few photos of what a professional detailer can do with todays gentile technology to clean yet preserve original paint and patina on an old car when there is zero rust. Not sure if the Visio of the frame after washing etc will load but almost looks like a frame off. The paint came out beautifully for 1978 paint. Still need interior spots to show 100% original interior clean up.
Rear end code showed up clear as a bell.

Frankly I had no idea the frame, body, paint, vinyl top and interior would have possibly ever looked this great when I bought it. Engine runs like a dream even after the build in 1978. I see quite a few w30’s for sale at Mecum Indy starting tomorrow. All have just the w27 backing plate and not the real full W27. 300 of them or they’re about divided between 3000+ W30’s and 1000+W31’s. I did not have a clue how rare the W27 was either when I bought the car. But all the first three owners I have talked to knew even in the early 70’s. Cannot load my video too large.

you’ve also been asked a couple times if it’s the number matching block…is it?

Quite a few of these are also found in the Rally 350. Years ago I've seen more of these in Rally 350's than any other model.
In a W31 is quite rare as the 31 is a rare bird in itself.
Although a very highly sort after and cool option, the simple fact is they didn't hold up to the HP/TQ mighty "W" engines dished out. Especially if you were banging a 4 speed. Forget about racing with it.

What a fantastic memory to have !
To have actually sat down and ordered one of the wonderful machines when new.
If only we could step back in time.. if only for a moment.
I guess that's what memories are for.

Your W-30 is amazing, the 1st car that we bought after getting married is a W-30 with a build date 03-70. It currently has 264,503.5 miles on her in original paint still. We bought it when it had 101,000 and rack up the miles. We paid 1,000.00 for her as the engine had been rebuilt. Years ago I tried posting pictures of her and just gave up because of the fat finger little keyboard thing. Just not as easy to do when you get older.

So its now up for sale..hmmm. Thats a seriously clean body, correct car with the exception of a non numbers matching block. On bring a trailer a few months back that green on green, concourse restored using nos parts, automatic car sold for 83k. So with the state of the market flattening out my guess is this car with the w27 rear end is worth roughly the same but probably much less. That green on green BAT car was immaculate, should have brought 100k. However the color puts a damper on things. Obviously just my opinion.

Agreed, stripes way off, non numbers matching block. It is definitely a super solid original car. Be interesting to see what it brings..damn muscle car market is all over the board right now..

There's a Rallye 350 with a factory W-27 documented that went to Canada. I have a copy of the microfiche somewhere on my phone that shows the options including W-45 and W-27.

It's a cool car but has been messed with. If you look closely at the grain on the bucket seat material it appears someone repaired them.

I recall seeing Jerry Dover Sr. and Jr. both running Oldsmobiles in Stock Eliminator at the Gator Nationals, and I believe that one, if not both, had the W-27 rear end.
