Californ-I-A... what a hoot!
Me misses and I just got back from Palm Desert California, a much needed vacation for us both. We visited Joshua Tree National Park, a very interesting place if you're into nature, geology, and desert landscapes. We also visited the Salton Sea, which is an "accidental sea" and a state park in California. Short story, around 1900 they built irrigation canals from the Colorado River for farmland, but during a period of heavy rain and flooding, the canal levees failed, and water flowed into a dry lake bed at over 200 feet below sea level. It ran for almost 2 years before they could stop the flooding, and by then, the "dry lake" was 45 miles long and over 20 miles wide. The Salton Sea became a recreational area until the 1960's, when nature took over. The sea was evaporating, the salt and heavy metals from the desert floor and agriculture turned the water toxic. Fish died- like, all of them. they floated ashore- I'm told you could smell the stench all the way to LA. Most of the area is ghost towns now- so of course, we had to go see it while we were in the area.
Here's some pictures of Bombay Beach- so named because it used to be used for target practice by the military, for airplanes, bombing runs... it's a kind of artist colony now... but it still smells bad...
this is the "state park"... buried tires, not sure, but they're tied together like they were some kind of bumpers for boats, maybe..
bias ply, I think...
This is Bombay Beach...
Here's the "drive In'.. there was a double feature playing "Youth Gone Wild" and "Reefer Madness"
The big screen adds a twist on the concept of "moving pictures"..
We had a great spot until this guy parked in front of us!
Great view from the front seat, but really, there wasn't a lot of action
I think this one could be had, for the right price. Anyone looking for a lightly used Valiant?

Years ago there was a documentary about the Salton Sea saying how it is following what happened to the Aral Sea. That one dried up then the toxic dust left behind from all the agricultural chemicals blew into populated areas and caused all kinda of issues. Look out Palm Springs.
